Write Stuff

Detailed Description : Dean Rea is a retired newspaper editor and university professor who volunteered to help teach his two granddaughters how to write. As he describes it, 'I realized that this would be a unique opportunity to share the information gathering and writing skills that I had acquired during a newspaper and university teaching career that spanned a half century'. This proved so successful that the teaching of two granddaughters grew to classes of homeschoolers who wanted to learn to write. This book is the distillation of those classes. It begins with simple assignments like letter writing and 'pencils without erasers,' where Rea tells the student to tape over his eraser and then write at least 100 words about what happened to them the day before. The book goes on to such topics as interviewing and writing a non-fiction article, an excellent step-by-step section on essay writing, and finally a section on news, advertising, and photography, with hints on writing for publication. Since many of the books on writing available today emphasize 'creative writing,' this book offers a necessary balance, with its focus on non-fiction writing, which is certainly where most students (and adults who write as a part of their job) will spend the bulk of their writing time. -JDS
